Former Liverpool defender and football pundit Jamie Carragher has clarified his stance on Michael Carrick's future as Manchester United's head coach. His previous comments had been wrongly interpreted as criticism of the Manchester gaffer.
With the team under immense pressure following a rocky start to the season, Carragher is adamant that the United hierarchy should not seek a managerial change midway through the current campaign.
Speaking on The Overlap, Carragher opened up about how his earlier remarks had been misread by the public, providing insight into his perspective on Carrick's role at the club.
A couple of weeks ago, I wrote a newspaper column about Carrick, and, as often happens, nobody really read the text; everyone just saw the headline. They took it as though I was attacking him when, in fact, it was quite the opposite, Carragher noted.
The pundit stressed that he views the speculation surrounding Carrick's potential departure as unfounded:
I think it would be just ridiculous to get rid of Carrick right now. While some might think I’m criticising him, my view is that I don’t see Carrick as a long-term manager of Manchester United. I get the feeling he’s just doing a job to help the club navigate through this turbulent, difficult period, and then essentially hand the baton over to someone else.
