Napoli's Romelu Lukaku is closing in on a transfer to Turkish side Fenerbahce. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the two parties have reached the final stage of negotiations, and the 33-year-old Belgian striker has given his tentative approval to a two-year deal.
The expected transfer fee between the clubs is estimated to be between £9 million and £10 million.
Despite Lukaku leaving Chelsea on a permanent basis, the Blues are set to benefit financially from this move:
- Sell-on clause: When Chelsea sanctioned the sale of the striker to Napoli, a sell-on fee of 40% from any subsequent transfer was included in the agreement.
- Payment sum: Should the deal go through as anticipated, Chelsea will bolster their budget by up to £4 million.
- Financial fair play: This unexpected income will aid Chelsea in improving their financial metrics under the Profitability and Sustainability Regulations (PSR).
This financial boost marks a silver lining at the end of a tumultuous chapter between the London club and the Belgian. In 2021, Chelsea acquired Lukaku from Inter Milan for a record £97.5 million. However, due to off-field disagreements and inconsistent form, the forward was loaned back to Inter and also to Roma before being sold to Napoli.
