Tottenham midfielder Mateus Fernandes has reassured fans. His recent absence from training was due to normal fatigue, not an injury.
During the pre-season tour, the Portuguese player was merely observing the sessions from the sidelines. This led to speculation about a serious injury. However, he quickly denied those claims.
“I saw my friends; they started calling me. They were asking, ‘What happened? Are you injured?’ No, I'm just a little tired, but nothing serious, and I'm ready now,” the player explained.
Fernandes is also excited about the opportunity to play alongside the team's new signing, Sandro Tonali.
“We'll see. I think I can play deeper, but he can play deeper too. It depends on the game; sometimes he can play as a ‘six’ and I as an ‘eight’,” noted the midfielder.
“He’s a great guy, a fantastic team mate, and an amazing player,” added the Portuguese.
Missing the recent World Cup was a painful blow for him, but it has provided serious motivation for the future.
“One of my goals last season was to play for Portugal in the World Cup. It was a big disappointment for me not to be there,” Fernandes admitted.
“Now I need to show my qualities. I fully believe and hope that I will be there for the next World Cup,” he emphasised.
In closing, he assessed the Londoners' preparation for the new season.
“We know anything can happen in the Premier League. Every match is very tough. We’re trying to find our principles, day by day, game by game,” said the midfielder.
“We have players who are also improving the team, and we’re going day by day, step by step. We’ll see,” Mateus concluded.
