Sir Alex Ferguson shared that Jose Mourinho was officially offered the Manchester United job in 2013. Initially agreeing, the Portuguese later withdrew, tearfully citing his promise to return to Chelsea.

Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that Jose Mourinho turned down the opportunity to succeed him at Manchester United back in 2013, choosing instead to return to Chelsea.

In a revealing documentary on Netflix, the legendary Scotsman recounts the conversations that ensued after Mourinho was offered the position at Old Trafford, only to have a change of heart shortly thereafter.

"He was offered the job, yes," Ferguson affirmed.

"I sat him down and explained the situation. As far as I understood, he was on board. And then, just a few hours later, everything changed," the former United boss added, reflecting on that pivotal moment.

"One night he called me, he was in tears and said, ‘Alex, I can’t accept. I’ve given my word to Chelsea, and I’m not going to break it’", Ferguson recounted.

"The reason he gave me made sense, but I was disappointed," the legendary manager concluded.
