Tottenham's head coach Roberto De Zerbi has confirmed that James Maddison is ready to return to the team for their match against Aston Villa.
The Spurs have had a difficult start to the 2026/27 season, failing to register a win and not scoring a single goal after four Premier League games. Their woes were compounded midweek with a knockout from the League Cup, where they suffered a defeat to Liverpool away from home.
With pressure mounting on De Zerbi, the Italian tactician may push for a crucial decision to start Maddison from the off.
Maddison ready to feature again
Maddison has been sidelined for much of the early part of the season due to a severe injury—a rupture of his anterior cruciate ligament suffered back in July 2025.
This season, the midfielder has had only 35 minutes of action, but has fully trained with the squad over the past 10 to 15 days.
De Zerbi confirmed that Maddison, along with Pedro Porro and Sandro Tonali, will be available for the clash against Aston Villa.
“Porro, Tonali and James Maddison are all available for selection.”
The coach emphasised that Maddison's return needs to be handled gradually.
“James has been working with the team for the last 10-15 days. Despite his technical prowess, he needs to build his physical condition and maintain fitness.”
De Zerbi highlights Maddison's key attributes
The Italian manager has also pointed out the impact Maddison can have on Tottenham's play. According to De Zerbi, Maddison offers the team qualities that other players currently lack.
“Once he reaches optimal condition, he will be very important for us.”
“From a personal perspective, in terms of character, quality, and experience, he is crucial. The quality of his passing sets him apart from others.”
The upcoming tussle with Aston Villa presents Tottenham another chance to end their winless streak and finally get on the scoresheet this season in the Premier League.
For Maddison, this match could mark a significant step towards a full comeback after a lengthy rehabilitation.
