Manchester United may pull back from signing a third midfielder due to Mason Mount's form in pre-season and redirect their budget to other positions.

Manchester United are reassessing their priorities as the final month of the transfer window approaches. Initially, the club planned to sign three new central midfielders to compensate for the departure of Casemiro and address the depth issues that were evident last season.

However, following an investment of around $114 million (£85 million) in the acquisitions of Andre Santos and Youri Tielemans (as well as the signing of goalkeeper Karl Darlow on a free), club officials at the Red Devils may pull back from acquiring a third defensive midfielder.

Key aspects of the transfer situation at Man Utd

Reallocation of budget:

According to The Athletic, the signing of a defensive destroyer (previously linked with Carlos Baleba, Aurelien Tchouameni, or Manu Kone) is no longer guaranteed. The club are considering redirecting the remaining funds to other positions: left-back (with Lewis Hall from Newcastle on the list), left winger, and an experienced striker to back up Benjamin Sesko (like Jean-Philippe Mateta or free agent Dusan Vlahovic).

Midfield situation:

In the absence of long-term injured Manuel Ugarte, Michael Carrick has Kobbie Mainoo, Youri Tielemans, and Andre Santos at his disposal.

  • Kobbie Mainoo and Youri Tielemans: Both possess high football intelligence and playmaking abilities.
  • Andre Santos: Stands out for his work rate and reliability in passing, acting as a protective shield.
  • However, none of them have the destructive physical attributes of a typical specialist defensive midfielder like Casemiro.

Internal solution - a change in Mason Mount's role:

An alternative in the market could be 27-year-old Mason Mount. During pre-season training, the midfielder played in deeper positions centrally rather than his usual attacking midfield or winger role. If Mount can avoid injuries, his experience and versatility may help address the numbers in central areas without additional expenditure. Additionally, young academy product Tyler Fletcher is being brought into the first team.
