Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk has delivered a robust response to criticism following his team’s disappointing World Cup campaign. The centre-back was called out for allegedly pushing for a switch to a five-defender formation ahead of the round of 16 clash against Morocco.
The Dutch side played to a 1-1 draw before losing 3-2 on penalties, prompting a fierce backlash against Ronald Koeman’s tactical changes from the Dutch media.
Addressing reporters, Van Dijk remarked:
One of your colleagues claimed that it was my idea to switch to a five-man defence. That’s absolute nonsense.
The fact is we underperformed at the World Cup. That’s the harsh truth. We didn’t do well in the tournament. But it’s not just down to me; we’re a team.
Your comments about me having ruined Dutch football after the World Cup are completely unfounded.
The Liverpool defender was keen to stress that tactical decisions rest with the coaching staff:
The plan is devised by the coaching team. There’s rubbish being spread around that makes me look even worse. It happens too often.
I was told that it was because of me we opted for a five-man defence, that Ronald Koeman and I have destroyed Dutch football. The plan was working for 89 minutes, although the match itself was poor. We were close to progressing, but I didn’t make that decision.
Post-World Cup, there were discussions about Van Dijk potentially retiring from international duty. However, after a conversation with new head coach Xavi, he quickly decided to stay on:
I needed some time off with my family, and then had an important chat with the national team coach. Within ten seconds, it was clear to me that I was going to continue.
