Following a closely contested Nations League clash, England's head coach, Thomas Tuchel, expressed his belief that his side had the potential to defeat Spain. He pointed out that the Three Lions missed chances to leverage their strengths effectively.
Tuchel emphasised the quality of the counter-attack from his squad, particularly referencing the goal scored by Anthony Gordon. However, he lamented that their efforts were ultimately insufficient.
An excellent counter-attack led to Anthony Gordon's goal. We managed to win the ball and break quickly, but we could have created more chances if we had been more composed in the final third. We had a staggering number of interceptions, around 12 to 15 more than Spain in their half, but we failed to convert those into significant moments or goals. If we had done so, we would have won the match. The effort was there, the quality was evident, and parts of our game were very good, but the result doesn't reflect that today.
Gordon, who scored England's opening goal, echoed Tuchel's sentiments, stating he sees no significant gap in quality between the two teams.
They were just as good as we were, and we were just as good as them. I don't believe there's a massive difference; I feel we are very close. If the penalty had gone in... Perhaps we would have pushed on and won the match.
Looking ahead, Tuchel's squad has three more fixtures during the international break, including home and away matches against the Czech Republic and an away game against Croatia.
