Thierry Henry has expressed that Bradley Barcola will need some time to acclimatise to Liverpool's style of play, but he cautioned that due to the significant transfer fee, expectations will be high for the French winger.
The 24-year-old joined from PSG in August for a staggering £106 million, with an additional £17 million in potential bonuses. Barcola has appeared in five matches under Andoni Iraola but is yet to find the back of the net.
Henry noted that transitioning from Luis Enrique's system can be quite challenging:
It's clear that players like Kvaratskhelia, Dembele, and Barcola thrive in Luis Enrique's setup. When you've become accustomed to a particular system where everyone knows their roles, moving to a new team can be tricky.
He's just arrived at Liverpool, doesn’t speak English yet, and the style and intensity of the league are entirely different.
Drawing from his own experiences in adapting after moving to England, Henry reflected:
I went through this myself. At one point, you switch gears and start feeling more comfortable. You begin to speak English, cracking jokes in the changing room, becoming less shy, and people understand you better.
However, the former Arsenal striker was adamant that Barcola's hefty price tag will amplify the pressure on him:
He didn’t ask for that kind of fee, but now that figure is hanging over him. We know how dangerous he is one-on-one and how quick he is.
He definitely needs to work on his finishing, but that’s normal. If you compare how I finished chances at 19-20 to how I did later in my career, the difference is colossal.
Henry warned that the status Barcola carries will not allow him a lengthy adjustment period without delivering results:
He’s won the Champions League twice, plays for the French national team, and everyone knows about his talent. People won't wait for him to fully develop as a player. He will have to deliver.
Henry also praised another French newcomer at Liverpool, Jeremy Doku, who has quickly established himself at centre-back alongside Virgil van Dijk:
He was always highly rated. When I coached the French youth team, I wanted to call him up when he was only 16 or 17, but he couldn’t make it because he had exams.
You can already see he understands what’s required at this level, especially physically. Of course, playing alongside Virgil helps. Am I surprised by how he’s handling the expectations? Not at all.
Both Barcola and Doku are now representing France under Zinédine Zidane, having started in their recent 1-0 victory over Belgium.
