Enzo Maresca could be on his way out of Manchester City next summer if the club faces relegation as a consequence of alleged financial rule violations. This opinion comes from former Everton CEO Keith Wyness.
Having taken charge of Manchester City only last summer, Maresca started his Premier League campaign in impressive fashion, winning all of his opening matches. However, Wyness believes that when signing his contract, the Italian must have included provisions for a potential departure in the event of serious sanctions against the club.
Wyness highlighted that this is purely speculative:
Given all these accusations, I’m sure that Maresca’s contract includes relevant clauses.
If a decision is made before Christmas, I don’t believe he’ll leave in January. More likely, he’ll remain until the end of the season, but I expect he’ll leave the club in June.
The former Everton chief added that Maresca’s future hinges on the severity of the punishment that Manchester City ultimately receives:
These are all hypothetical situations, and it’s important to be clear about that. But if there’s a relegation or something similar, I expect he’ll depart in June.
There are certainly various clauses in his contract that can be activated. Therefore, my short answer is yes, I do expect him to leave in that scenario.
Wyness also expressed confidence that Maresca wouldn’t leave the team mid-season, even if serious sanctions were announced in the coming months.
Earlier, Wyness speculated that Manchester City's appeal could take up to three months, with the club determined to contest the verdict.
Wyness also predicted a points deduction of at least 50 points, which he believes could effectively lead to the team’s relegation. However, as the specifics of the sanctions remain undecided, the potential relegation of City and Maresca's exit remain speculative scenarios.
