Teddy Sheringham has slammed the transfer of Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa to Manchester United for £35 million. The former United forward believes the Belgian has potential, but his ability isn't enough to elevate the club back to the top.

Teddy Sheringham has expressed his reservations about Manchester United's decision to bring in Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa for £35 million. The ex-United forward feels the club should have pursued a midfielder of a higher calibre.

In Sheringham's view, United has missed out on stronger candidates for this position and needed to be more aggressive in the transfer market:

If you want the best, you have to pay for them. We’ve seen it time and again. Just think back to the Sir Alex Ferguson era. He wasn’t afraid to splash the cash on young top talent who then became leaders and set the standard for others.

Can Youri Tielemans be that leader? I don’t think so. He won’t change how people view Manchester United, won’t inspire others to raise their game, and he certainly won’t bring the club back to the top.

With him, United will just be an average team, and for a club of this stature, being average simply isn’t enough.

These doubts about the Belgian's signing have also been echoed by Jamie Carragher.

Meanwhile, Manchester United are continuing to bolster their midfield options. Following the signings of Tielemans and Andre Santos, the club is now working on a transfer for Carlos Baleba from Brighton.
