Steven Gerrard has praised 21-year-old Jeremy Jacquet's start at Liverpool, calling the French defender the ideal future replacement for Virgil van Dijk in a year or two.

Steven Gerrard has hailed Jeremy Jacquet as the perfect long-term successor to Virgil van Dijk at Liverpool after an impressive start at Anfield.

Jacquet has made a significant impact under the guidance of new manager Andoni Iraola, having joined the club in a deal worth up to £60 million back in January. He spent the latter half of last season on loan at Rennes, before officially linking up with the Merseysiders this summer.

The 21-year-old has featured in every match for Liverpool this season, helping the team keep clean sheets in three consecutive Premier League games during the early weeks of the campaign.

Gerrard was full of praise for the young defender, expressing his firm belief that the Frenchman has the potential to become a key figure at Anfield.

I am delighted with him; he has impressed me from the very first friendly matches, Gerrard stated.

The club legend added:

I think he possesses calmness, fantastic attributes, and moves excellently. There’s still a bit of rawness to him, but I see the next level he can reach. I believe that in a year or two, he will be the ideal replacement for Virgil, as he has really strengthened the back four.
