Tottenham stadium showcased its field transformation for the NFL match through a unique retractable grass system.

The Tottenham stadium underwent an incredible transformation ahead of Sunday’s NFL regular season game between the Indianapolis Colts and the Washington Commanders. A time-lapse video released by the NFL showcased how the Premier League arena is converted into a venue for American football.

The standout feature of the London stadium, designed to cater to both sports, is its dual playing surfaces. The natural grass pitch is divided into three massive retractable sections, each weighing over 3,000 tonnes and comprising 99 smaller trays. The process of retracting the natural pitch beneath the South Stand takes around 25 minutes, revealing a ready-made artificial surface for American football.

This innovative construction effectively preserves the quality of the pitch for Premier League matches while allowing NFL games to be hosted without compromising the experience and visibility. It’s worth noting that the stadium is the official home of the NFL in the UK, with a partnership ensuring at least two games will take place here annually through the 2029/30 season. This Sunday, October 4, the venue will host the Colts versus the Commanders, followed by the Philadelphia Eagles taking on the Jacksonville Jaguars on October 11.
