Selling Lewis Hall to Newcastle is increasingly looking like one of Chelsea's most contentious transfer decisions in recent years. While the 22-year-old Englishman has made a name for himself as one of the Premier League's standout left-backs, the London club has found itself splashing the cash once again to fill this spot.
Hall broke into Chelsea's first team towards the end of the 2022/23 season and quickly became one of the academy's most recognisable success stories. However, by the following summer, he was off to Newcastle on loan with an obligation to buy.
Despite only starting eight matches in his debut season in the Premier League, Newcastle forked out €33 million for the left-back. Since then, he has solidified his place in the starting XI and has been a regular feature on the pitch this season.
His rapid progress hasn't gone unnoticed, either, as he recently earned his place in the England national team. Hall was part of the starting lineup in recent Nations League matches against the Czech Republic and Croatia, while former teammate Bruno Guimaraes hailed him as the 'best in the world' in his position.
The situation is particularly painful for Chelsea amid further squad reshuffles. Following Marc Cucurella's departure to Real Madrid for €55 million, the Blues desperately needed a new left-back.
On the request of manager Xabi Alonso, the club welcomed Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano for €19 million. However, the Spaniard is still finding his feet, having started just one Premier League match so far.
What's more, Chelsea's issues extend beyond just left-back woes. Had Hall remained at the club, the €19 million spent on Chavarria could have been allocated to strengthen the centre of midfield.
On transfer deadline day, Chelsea attempted to sign Manu Kone from Roma or Lamina Kamara from Monaco. A deal for Kamara was agreed, but ultimately, it fell through.
Midfield is now one of the primary concerns for Xabi Alonso's team, particularly with Moises Caicedo sidelined by injury. It's expected that recruiting a new midfielder will be a top priority for the club in the 2027 transfer window.
