The 2026/27 Premier League season kicks off on Friday, August 21, with a match in London. Reigning champions Arsenal, under Mikel Arteta's tutelage, will face returning top-flight side Coventry City, managed by Frank Lampard.
How Coventry City earned their top-flight return
Last season, Frank Lampard's side dominated the Championship, clinching the title with an impressive 11-point lead. Their attacking prowess was unmatched, scoring 97 goals, while also boasting the league's tightest defence, conceding only 45.
This summer, Coventry City have been busy in the transfer market:
- Midfielder Gustavo Hamer returned after a three-year stint at Sheffield United;
- Franck Onyeka signed a permanent deal after his loan from Brentford;
- Lum Chawna moved from Burnley for a fee of £20 million;
- Orel Amenda joined from Eintracht Frankfurt;
- The highly-rated 20-year-old Caleb Yirenki was brought in from Norsjelland for £23.1 million;
- Goalkeeper Karl Rushworth was acquired from Brighton for £22 million.
Arsenal's new signings and form
Arsenal have bolstered their squad with some high-profile additions:
- Bruno Guimaraes was signed from Newcastle for around £75 million;
- Winger Christos Tzolis transferred from Brugge and already provided two assists in his debut match;
- Defender Piero Incapie was bought permanently after his loan;
- Goalkeeper Illan Meslier arrived on a free transfer from Leeds to provide backup to David Raya.
The Gunners kicked off their season with an emphatic win in the Community Shield, thrashing Manchester City 3-0 thanks to goals from Calafiori, Havertz, and Odegaard.
Injuries and expected line-ups
Arsenal head into the match without central defenders Jurriën Timber and William Saliba due to injury. Meanwhile, Coventry will be without defender Luke Wolfenden, who is also sidelined by fitness issues.
Expected line-ups:

Coventry City (4-3-3): Rushworth — Van Ewijk, Thomas, Amenda, Dasilva — Onyeka, Yirenki, Grimes — Chawna, Sims, Thomas-Asante.
