Sam Byram made the decision to leave Leeds United for Middlesbrough after turning down a new contract this summer, opting for more playing time. Former striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, who has played for both clubs, believes this transfer could prove very beneficial for the Championship side.
Leeds were keen on keeping Byram at Elland Road, but the defender sought regular football after being reduced to a rotational role last season, making just five appearances due to injuries and fierce competition for places.
Opting to depart as a free agent, Byram joined Middlesbrough, and Hasselbaink is confident that the 33-year-old's experience could be invaluable in the quest for promotion.
He stated:
It’s already apparent how much experience he brings. It’s a significant and very shrewd signing for them.
The key will be keeping him fit, as he has had injury issues before. If he stays healthy, he can help them get to the Premier League. Middlesbrough must go up this season.
This marks Byram’s second stint at Leeds; he was a product of their academy and returned to the club in 2023. His first season back saw him feature in 37 matches, helping the team win the Championship and secure a Premier League return.
However, his last season at Leeds was marred by injuries and stiff competition for places. Now at Middlesbrough, he is eager to regain his regular place in the starting eleven and contribute significantly to the club’s promotion ambitions.
