Alexander Isak has already found the back of the net four times in just five Premier League matches this season, yet Brian King argues there’s more to come from Liverpool’s striker. According to the former scout, the team must enhance their use of the Swedish international's main asset — his blistering speed.
King emphasises that Isak thrives on through balls into open spaces behind defenders. Moreover, he believes the striker should be receiving the ball more frequently inside the penalty area.
Explaining his perspective, King stated:
Isak’s biggest weapon is undoubtedly his pace, and he needs to start using it to its full potential once again.
So much depends on the quality of the passes he receives. A player like him needs to get the ball in open areas. He should be served more often inside the box.
To illustrate his point, King referenced Erling Haaland’s recent performance for Norway against Portugal, where the forward scored but had missed several clear chances prior to his goal.
King added:
I watched the Norway versus Portugal match yesterday. The Portuguese scored first, and then Haaland equalised. But by that point, he could have easily had at least three goals — two headers saved by the keeper, plus another chance.
These were really good opportunities. Usually, at least two out of four such chances turn into goals. But in football, it’s simple: if you don’t take your chances, you pay the price.
This season, Isak has already outstripped his previous campaign by scoring four goals in five matches, having only managed three throughout last season due to injuries.
He is also forging a solid partnership with Cody Gakpo, making the most of his limited opportunities. However, King remains confident that if Liverpool can find Isak earlier with passes into space and supply him sufficiently in the box, his speed and movement could become an even greater issue for opposing teams.
