Liverpool are seriously considering Ryan as a viable long-term option to replace Mohamed Salah, particularly as they seek a new right winger in the wake of Salah's possible departure. However, the young winger's latest international outing for Brazil was far from impressive, prompting backlash in his home country after a disappointing display against Australia.
The Reds are still on the hunt for a quality right winger since Salah's future seems uncertain. Ryan's previous connection with Andoni Iraola during their time at Bournemouth could play a significant role in Liverpool's interest. Reports suggest that Liverpool might even break their transfer record to secure the Brazilian's services by 2027.
Yet, last night’s match spotlighted not just Ryan’s talent but also his vulnerabilities.
In Brazil's 4-2 victory over Australia, Ryan managed a mere 17 touches, executing just six successful passes out of 12 attempts. He lost both of his ground duels and won only two of the six aerial contests he faced.
Things took a turn for the worse when he was involved in two key moments leading to Australian goals. Following a corner, Ryan's clearance backfired, allowing the Australians to level the score, and later, he lost possession in midfield which led to a swift counter-attack resulting in another goal for Australia.
Terra did not hold back in their assessment of the winger’s performance:
He had an unsatisfactory match and was responsible for both of Australia’s goals.
On the other hand, GOAL Brasil adopted a more lenient stance, noting Ryan's overall contribution:
He was helpful in ball progression, but lacked the creative spark typically expected from attackers in the Brazil squad. He contributed to moving the ball, but rarely posed a threat to Australia's goal.
That said, one underwhelming performance won't necessarily deter Liverpool from their interest in Ryan.
In addition to Ryan, Liverpool are also weighing up alternative options for the right flank. Candidates include Brentford’s Kevin Schade, Brighton's Yankuba Minte, and Ismaila Sarr from Crystal Palace.
Last summer, Liverpool made two attempts to secure Minte's signature, both of which were turned down by Brighton. They may revisit this option come January.
The race to succeed Salah remains very much alive. Ryan is still in the mix, but with a potential record-breaking price tag hanging over him, every performance will come under intense scrutiny.
