Martin Subimendi's future at Arsenal is now under scrutiny following a significant summer reshuffle at the club. The arrival of Bruno Guimaraes has increased competition in midfield, but Mikel Arteta is not inclined to let the Spanish midfielder go in January.
In his debut season for the Gunners, Subimendi appeared in 57 matches. However, the start of the 2026/27 campaign has not been as promising for the 27-year-old. He has only featured in six of Arsenal's seven games this season, coming off the bench each time.
Part of the reason for his limited game time has been a late return to pre-season training after Spain's triumphant World Cup campaign in 2026. Furthermore, the arrival of Guimaraes and the excellent start to the season by Martin Odegaard have intensified competition in midfield.
Given his reduced playing time, there have been murmurs about a potential departure in January.
Real Madrid has maintained an interest in the midfielder, having explored a move for him last summer. Additionally, former Madrid manager Xabi Alonso was considering bringing Subimendi to Chelsea.
However, it is expected that Arsenal will reject any formal offers for the Spaniard. Arteta is keen to bolster his squad rather than weaken it mid-season and intends to give Subimendi another chance to reclaim his spot in the starting XI.
Therefore, despite the lack of starts in the initial games of the season and the increased competition, Arsenal currently does not view the sale of the midfielder as a viable option in the upcoming winter transfer window.
