Prime Minister Andy Burnham has expressed that he would be «very concerned» if Manchester City’s owners opt to sell the club in light of the recent ruling regarding financial violations.
As a reminder, an independent commission found City guilty on most counts of the 115 charges against them. The club, however, maintains its innocence and plans to appeal the decision. Burnham has praised the significant investments made by the hierarchy since Sheikh Mansour took over in 2008, contributing to Manchester's growth.
I would be very worried about losing such owners. They have been a tremendous partner in building modern Manchester and transforming Manchester City into a global force,— he stated.
The independent football regulator noted that the verdict raises «serious questions» and that following the disciplinary process, the potential for a review of the current owners’ licence may be on the table. Upcoming sanctions could range from fines and point deductions to expulsion from the Premier League.
Burnham urged caution against hasty conclusions, referencing his own experience in defending Everton in a profitability and sustainability breach case. According to him, rushing to judgments is unfair to the club, its fans, and the entire city.
