Morgan Gibbs-White has found himself called up to the England squad once more, but this time after a withdrawal from another player. His impressive form raises hopes for a more prominent role in Thomas Tuchel's setup.
Initially overlooked for the Nations League matches, Tuchel justified his selections by stating:
There's no point in calling up three, four or five 'tens'.
Among the original squad were Jude Bellingham, Morgan Rodgers, Cole Palmer, and Eberechi Eze. However, following Palmer's injury, Gibbs-White was called into action.
This isn't a new scenario for the midfielder. Back in March 2025, he also missed the initial squad before receiving a call-up after Palmer's exit.
This time around, Gibbs-White had just landed in Dubai for a family holiday, only to be summoned back to England after the squad's change.
His current form is not just good enough for a spot in the squad; it's deserving of significant game time.
In 2026, Gibbs-White netted an impressive 13 goals — a feat unmatched by any other midfielder in Europe's top five leagues. For comparison, Michael Olise followed with 12, while Cole Palmer managed nine, Scott McTominay eight, Bruno Fernandes seven, and Morgan Rodgers six. Remarkably, Gibbs-White's tally mirrors that of Erling Haaland over the same period.
But it's not just about the goals; Gibbs-White's contributions extend beyond scoring. In the current Premier League season, he's created 14 goal-scoring opportunities — second only to Pascal Groß, who leads with 15.
His passing statistics have also quelled previous doubts about his tendency to take risks and lose possession. This season, he has completed 172 passes with an impressive accuracy of 86.6%.
In contrast, Palmer has completed 161 passes at 80.7% accuracy, Rodgers has 134 at 79.1%, and Eze has a mere 39 at 79.4%.
Gibbs-White is capable of functioning as a classic 'ten’ or drifting out to the left flank. His versatility was integral in Nottingham Forest securing their Premier League status last season, and now Oliver Glasner is utilising him within a two-attacking-midfielder system.
Despite his consistent performances, Gibbs-White has yet to start a match in the England setup. However, with this latest call-up, Tuchel has an opportunity to reassess the role of the 26-year-old in the national team.
