15-Second Brief
Mikel Merino discusses his winning double in Spain's match against Croatia (2-1). The midfielder talks about his frustration at being a substitute, the tactical instructions from the coach, and the decisive goal assisted by Martin Subimendi.

Mikel Merino is delighted to have made the difference after coming off the bench for Spain against Croatia. His two goals secured a vital comeback victory for the national team, winning 2-1.

The Arsenal midfielder admitted to feeling frustrated about not being in the starting lineup, but the unity in the dressing room helps him stay positive and contribute when called upon.

I'm really happy to help again. It’s another time where I have to come off the bench with the right attitude, even though you’re annoyed that you can’t play more... but this team is a family, and that always shows.

He also revealed the instructions given by head coach Luis de la Fuente before he entered the fray, who urged him to play with maximum aggression.

He tells me to come on and do what I do best. Press after losing the ball, burst into the box and try to cause them damage.

Merino explained that his second goal came as a result of a well-thought-out tactical shift. He moved into an 'eight' position, receiving a brilliant key pass from Martin Subimendi.

It was more about running from deep. A tactical change to play as an 'eight'. But I know how good Martin Subimendi is. I burst into space, and he gave me a great ball. Out of four touches, you usually take three poorly and one well. I got the good one.

Despite Spain's perfect start to the tournament, Mikel Merino believes the team has more to achieve and stresses the importance of staying grounded.

We haven’t seen our maximum yet. We’re looking up, but we’re firmly on our feet. We need to stay humble, as there can be days like today when a good run can easily turn complicated.
