Newcastle United's head coach Matthias Jaissle shared his thoughts following the Magpies' 2-1 victory over Hull City in the Premier League.
The German manager praised his team's resilience and admitted to feeling especially proud of his players given the number of missing squad members.
“We showed an incredible reaction”
After a disappointing defeat to Leeds, Jaissle was keen to see the team respond accordingly — and he was satisfied with what he witnessed:
“We showed an incredible reaction after the loss to Leeds. The first half was magnificent, and we could have put all questions about the outcome to rest with another goal. We completely dominated.”
Despite appearing fatigued after the break, the Magpies managed to hold onto their lead:
“In the second half, it was clear the players were getting a bit heavy-legged. However, we played today without nine players.”
Jaissle commended his players' commitment at the end of the match:
“I am very proud of the players. I want to give them credit for what they did towards the end of the match when it was tough. Everyone was fully focused on defending our goal and truly fought for those three points. That’s the kind of determination we can rely on.”
“We deserved this victory”
According to Jaissle, Newcastle aimed to demonstrate a reaction following their previous setback:
“We wanted to show the right reaction after the Leeds match, and we are very proud to have done that. It was also important for us to respond in front of our supporters.”
He believes that the final scoreline was a fair reflection of the game:
“If you look at the full 90 minutes, it was a well-deserved victory.”
Jaissle pleased with start at Newcastle
The German also shared his initial impressions of working at the club, noting the challenging situation within the squad:
“Overall, I am really happy. There are a few difficulties visible from the outside, and the club is currently undergoing a significant transitional phase.”
Nonetheless, he praised the players' mentality:
“Given the circumstances, we are truly proud of what we’ve seen from the players so far. They are completely committed to this path.”
Newcastle will now use the international break for recovery:
“Now is the time to reflect and hope we can bring some players back from injury.”
