Manchester United are set to begin their Premier League campaign with an away fixture against Hull City. New signings Yuri Tielemans and Andre Santos could make their competitive debuts, while Benjamin Sesko is not yet fit to start.
Santos, who joined from Chelsea for around £50 million this summer, has been heavily involved in pre-season, featuring in all six of United's friendly matches. The Brazilian is expected to slot into central midfield.
Meanwhile, Tielemans joined later due to a mandatory three-week break following Belgium's World Cup quarter-final exit. He has already played 90 minutes in the final pre-season friendly against AC Milan and is also vying for a starting place in the opening game of the Premier League.
Carrick is likely to maintain the midfield trio that started against Milan, with Santos and Tielemans providing solidity deeper, while captain Bruno Fernandes will take up his usual role just behind the striker.
Defensively, questions still loom as Lisandro Martinez is yet to regain optimal form. This could see Aiden Haven partner Harry Maguire at centre-back. On the right, Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui are in a fierce battle for a starting spot, while Luke Shaw is expected to occupy the left flank. In goal, Senne Lammens should get the nod.
The attacking situation is complicated by Sesko’s unavailability following a three-month layoff. Therefore, Matheus Cunha might lead the line, with Bryan Mbeumo on the right and Patrick Dorgu on the left.
Mason Mount remains a doubt for the match. Additionally, Matthis de Ligt, Manuel Ugarte, and Tom Heaton will miss out due to injury.
