Former Liverpool player Vladimir Smicer has backed Dominik Soboszlai to one day wear the captain's armband for the Merseyside club. At present, the Hungarian midfielder is one of several vice-captains in the squad, alongside Alisson Becker and Joe Gomez.
Currently, the captaincy is held by the 35-year-old Virgil van Dijk, with head coach Andoni Iraola previously emphasising that Soboszlai should emerge as one of the team's leaders in the coming years.
Smicer commented:
Will Dominik Soboszlai be the next Liverpool captain after Virgil van Dijk? Absolutely, I can see it happening one day.
It's tough to compare him as both a player and a captain to Steven Gerrard, considering Stevie was intrinsically linked with Liverpool, having grown up in the club.
There was always a special bond between the club, the city, the fans, and Stevie. Even the players in the Liverpool dressing room could feel that connection.
Now, Soboszlai has only been at Liverpool for three years, whereas Stevie dedicated his entire life to the club. However, Dominik is heading in the right direction to follow in his footsteps.
I think Stevie enjoys watching Soboszlai play for Liverpool. If one day we were to call Dominik Stevie's successor, I don't think he'd mind.
Soboszlai himself has previously admitted that he dreams of wearing Liverpool's captaincy armband, calling it one of his main objectives during his time at the club.
