Liverpool have officially appointed Julian Ward as their new sporting director. Returning to Anfield after Richard Hughes’ move to Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal, Ward is set to take up a role he previously held during the 2022/23 season.
Having spent over a decade within Liverpool's structure, Ward is well acquainted with the club's inner workings and has previously been responsible for the team’s transfer activities.
Ward to lead football operations again
During his previous tenure as sporting director, Ward played a pivotal role in key transfers including Darwin Nunez, Alexis Mac Allister, and Cody Gakpo.
This time around, he will be at the helm of the club's transfer strategy, overseeing tasks such as player recruitment, negotiations, sales, contract extensions, and decisions regarding the current squad.
Mike Gordon, president of Fenway Sports Group, praised Ward's experience and understanding of Liverpool's football structure.
The return of Ward is also expected to provide additional support to the club’s head coach, Anthony Iraola.

Ward expressed his excitement about returning to the role.
“I’m incredibly happy to take on this position, and it goes without saying that I’m very grateful to the owners for their trust in me. Having worked within Liverpool’s football structure for over ten years, I fully understand the complexities of this role and the expectations and ambitions of this great club.”
Ward also highlighted the significance of the current period for Liverpool:
“This is an exciting time for Liverpool — both on and off the pitch, where changes go hand in hand with opportunities. Yet, the culture, values, and principles that have been at the heart of the club for so long remain as strong as ever.”
Significant work lies ahead with squad
One of Ward's major tasks will be managing contracts for existing players.
This includes making crucial decisions regarding the futures of Virgil van Dijk and Alisson, both of whom are entering the final year of their contracts.
Ward pointed out that Liverpool has already established the necessary infrastructure for the continued development of the team, from the first team and academy to the AXA Training Centre and AXA Melwood.
“The foundations have been laid, and continuing the work that the football hierarchy has conducted over recent seasons is both a huge responsibility and a great privilege.”
