Joe Cole thinks Manchester City will be the favourites to clinch the Premier League title this season, though a significant transfer by Arsenal could change his mind.
The former England midfielder is adamant that Mikel Arteta's side is in dire need of another top striker.
Cole's main target for the Gunners is Victor Osimhen. Despite the Nigerian's impressive tally of 21 goals across all competitions last season, he believes the current attacking line may not suffice for Arsenal to secure back-to-back titles:
I’ve been pondering this for a while, and I’m putting a star next to it. I think Manchester City will win the title unless Arsenal sign a new number nine, as I see that position as problematic.
So for now, I’m backing Manchester City, with Arsenal in second. However, if they land Victor Osimhen, I would immediately revise my prediction. Right now, my choice has to be City.
Former Premier League striker Carlton Cole agreed, insisting that the Nigerian's addition could drastically shift the balance of power:
Arsenal have a top squad, and if Osimhen joins them, they’ll be flying. If he arrives, he could very well become the league’s top scorer.
Meanwhile, Joe Cole assessed Chelsea's prospects under Xabi Alonso. The ex-Chelsea player has tipped the Blues for a third-place finish, highlighting the advantage of not competing in European competitions:
I’m placing Chelsea in third place. I believe they will have a really strong season. Not having European commitments will be a huge factor — we saw how that benefitted Manchester United last season.
Additionally, Chelsea finally have some experienced players on board. Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro, and Estevao have had relatively quiet summers, so I think they'll all be ready for the season.
On a positive note, Wayne Rooney holds an even more optimistic view of Arsenal's potential. The former Manchester United captain regards Arteta's team as clear favourites and suggests they could win the league by a significant margin.
