Former Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is confident that Moises Caicedo's return could provide a much-needed boost for Xabi Alonso's side.
Chelsea have struggled defensively, conceding 12 goals in their first five Premier League matches and currently sit in 10th place after suffering a 3-0 defeat to Brentford. The London club is yet to keep a clean sheet this season.
Hasselbaink highlighted that while Caicedo's presence could improve the team, he emphasised that the issues run deeper than just the absence of one player.
“I think when Caicedo returns — the top Caicedo — everything will naturally get better because he’s a top player. Having top players on the pitch definitely helps the team,” he noted.
However, the former Chelsea man added:
“But I don’t think it’s all about Caicedo. It’s a matter of the entire team and their defensive shape. Caicedo will certainly help, but so will Reece James. It’s not just about these two players. It’s a collective responsibility.”
Caicedo's situation
Moises Caicedo has made just 14 minutes of playing time across all competitions this season. The Ecuadorian was not called up for international duty as his fitness remains under assessment.
Reports suggest that the midfielder could make his return after the international break, with Chelsea's next Premier League clash being against Bournemouth.
