Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright has called for Manchester City to face unprecedented punishment after the independent commission found the club guilty of numerous financial violations.
The commission declared City guilty of the overwhelming majority of the charges brought against them. However, the club continues to deny any wrongdoing, and a final sanction is yet to be determined.
Wright's reaction to the unfolding situation was particularly vehement:
This is industrial-scale fraud. Just seeing it all laid out on paper is quite surreal.
It’s now impossible to talk about City without mentioning what’s happening, because this team has been nothing short of magnificent. I believe unprecedented punishment is called for.
According to Wright, the ramifications of this case could be long-lasting due to the likelihood of legal proceedings:
This is a huge day for the Premier League. They’ve challenged the entire country. Now we’re going to see a massive amount of litigation, and I think this will drag on for a long time. It’s very sad.
Wright played for Arsenal from 1991 to 1998 and won the Premier League title on two occasions.
