Graham Potter has backed Viktor Djoekers after a slow start to the season at Arsenal. The coach urged the forward to ignore criticism and promised to create conditions conducive to restoring his confidence.

Sweden's head coach Graham Potter has publicly backed Viktor Djoekers amidst a rocky start to the season with Arsenal. Potter suggests that the striker needs to cast aside the negativity and that a change of scenery with the national team could be key in helping him find his confidence again.

Last season, Djoekers enjoyed a stellar campaign, scoring 21 goals across all competitions and helping secure the Premier League title for Arsenal. However, this term, the 28-year-old has found himself warming the bench more often than not.

He remained unused in the first two Premier League matches and only managed a brief 12 minutes on the pitch against Chelsea. Initially given a start by Mikel Arteta in the Champions League clash against Napoli, he was soon relegated back to a substitute role.

This week, Djoekers had another opportunity to shine in the EFL Cup against Ipswich, but once again failed to find the net. With that in mind, it seems Kai Havertz is the preferred option for the central attacking role ahead of the upcoming fixture against Brighton.

Commenting on Djoekers' situation after his selection for the national team, Potter said:

It happens. In football, as in life, you experience highs and lows. He’s a Premier League champion. He scored plenty of goals for Arsenal. He had a fantastic World Cup qualifying campaign and performed admirably during the tournament.

Players at this level inevitably face criticism at some stage. But this is not a problem.

Potter emphasised that the national team coaching staff will strive to help the forward regain his self-confidence.

The Sweden boss added:

We love Viktor. He enjoys being here. We'll create the best environment for him to maintain his high standards.

When asked how the national team could assist Djoekers, Potter noted:

This is part of a footballer's life. Things can change very quickly, and you have to learn to deal with it.

Sometimes a change of scenery can benefit a player. We’re all looking forward to Viktor and will do our best to help him rediscover his joy in football.
