The Football Association has officially charged Chelsea for breaching rule E21 following discriminatory chanting by their supporters during a recent derby win against Fulham (3-2) on August 24.
An FA spokesperson commented on the disciplinary proceedings:
It is alleged that the club failed to ensure appropriate behaviour from its spectators and/or supporters, allowing improper, offensive, aggressive, or humiliating conduct.
The organisation clarified that the recorded incidents during the ninth minute of the match "included direct or indirect references to religion or religious beliefs."
Immediately after the match, Chelsea's hierarchy reached out to fans with an official statement. The club acknowledged "numerous reports of sectarian chants from a small group" of supporters and warned that they would impose "the strictest measures" against every identified offender.
Previously, Chelsea had condemned similar incidents; in 2021, Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn fell victim to sectarian abuse.
As it stands, Chelsea currently sits 10th in the Premier League table after five matches played.
