Dwight Yorke believes that the expectations for Michael Carrick have risen significantly following an impressive last season. The defeat of Manchester United to newly-promoted Hull City — 0:2 — has been described by him as a nightmare start to the season.
Yorke shared his thoughts:
The honeymoon for Carrick is over. He earned the opportunity he was given and successfully led us back into the top four.
From that perspective, he deserves a chance. Now it’s time for him to take the next step and show how good of a manager he really is. This season will reveal if he is capable of that.
The former United striker admitted he was particularly disappointed with the result given the pre-season expectations:
For Manchester United, this is a nightmare start. We approached the season with great optimism after what we now consider a very good past season, where the team returned to the Champions League.
We faced Hull in the first match, a quite manageable opponent historically for United, but after just one game, we’re already in a tricky situation.
