Just this past summer, Douglas Luiz seemed destined to leave Juventus. Now, the Brazilian has started all six matches of the season, becoming a key midfielder for Luciano Spalletti and earning a recall to the Brazil national team.
Luiz's first spell in Turin after joining from Aston Villa in 2024 was far from ideal. Juventus even sent him back to England on loan, and upon his return, a transfer seemed very much on the cards.
However, everything changed when Spalletti decided to give the midfielder another chance. Sky Sport Italia journalist Paolo Agemo believes Luiz epitomises how a player's fortunes can shift dramatically:
Douglas Luiz has undoubtedly become a symbol of such players. He returned from his loan in England and has had the chance to restart his career at Juventus – and now he has six starts and, most importantly, a fantastic beginning to the season.
It’s not just about the numbers. He looks brilliant on the ball in front of the defence. Especially after Locatelli's injury, Douglas has become one of the key players during this stage.
Speaking earlier, Luiz expressed his determination to fight for his place, despite the lingering possibility of leaving:
I’m thrilled with this start to the season because I wanted to return to Italy. I spoke with my representatives and people at the club and said I would do everything necessary to secure my spot here. I want to win wearing the Juventus shirt and repay the club for their trust and investment in me.
According to Luiz, Spalletti made it clear from the outset that his place in the squad would depend on his performance:
Spalletti has always said that the players who deserve to play will be on the pitch. He trusted my footballing abilities and knew that when I was ready, I could show a high level.
His successful season start has already earned Douglas Luiz a place back in the Brazil national team. In just a few months, his position has changed completely: from a player Juventus was ready to part ways with to an integral starter for the side.
