Everton's manager David Moyes was left frustrated with his side's showing after they were held to a 2-2 draw by Hull City. The Toffees, he insisted, fell well below their usual standard, allowing avoidable defensive mistakes and squandering several promising chances to score.
In an interview with BBC Match of the Day, Moyes revealed his disappointment at not securing a win after Everton had taken a 2-1 lead.
'I am hugely disappointed with our overall level of play. We performed significantly below what we have been showing lately. When we went ahead at 2-1, I didn't think we could fail to win this match. However, a few defensive errors let us down, and we missed a lot of chances that could have made our task easier,' the manager remarked.
Moyes also commented on Brennan Johnson's disallowed goal
The Everton boss specifically addressed the incident surrounding Johnson's disallowed goal. Moyes accepted that the forward may have been offside after his first shot was blocked, but he questioned whether the goalkeeper's positioning was accurately assessed.
'I think there was a shot initially, and he could have been offside at the moment of the blocked shot, before scoring on the rebound. I'm generally fine with that decision. However, I am unsure if the goalkeeper's heel kept him onside. I hope they drew the lines and checked it thoroughly,' Moyes noted.
Everton expected a different start to the second half
Moyes pointed out that the players received feedback during half-time regarding their first-half performance. The team had anticipated a stronger start to the second half but allowed Hull City to score early in the period.
'We were unhappy with how we played in the first half, so we were expecting to come out strong after the break. But we lost the battle, miscleared the ball, and allowed the opponent to score. We then had to fight our way back into the game, which we did. I believe we deserved to equalise,' the manager added.
However, Moyes recognised that securing one point away against Hull City might not be seen as a bad result, considering the hosts' previous performances against Manchester United and Aston Villa.
Nonetheless, Moyes highlighted that after Everton took the lead, he was hopeful for a win.
'When we went 2-1 up, I felt we could only be the winners,' Moyes remarked.
The match concluded with a score of 2-2, as Everton let their advantage slip, while Hull City earned a point through determination and the conversion of their opportunities.
