Chelsea legend Frank Lampard is gearing up for his debut Premier League match as manager of Coventry City. The 48-year-old took charge in November 2024, leading the club to a play-off victory and then clinching the Championship title, returning them to the top tier for the first time in 25 years.
His success resulted in a contract extension until 2029, but experts are predicting Coventry will face a tough battle to remain in the Premier League.
Former Coventry defender Colin Hendry spoke to GOAL, expressing that any hypothetical sacking of Lampard amidst a shaky start would be incredibly unfair:
Frank has done an incredible job with Coventry. He’s pulled the club from obscurity and put them back on the football map. It would be very, very harsh for the hierarchy to not support him.
I don’t think Frank would struggle for offers from other Premier League clubs. If Coventry can establish themselves in the elite and follow the path of Brighton, Brentford, or Bournemouth, that would be the maximum anyone could ask for. I can't even imagine the hierarchy contemplating a change in manager.
Hendry also highlighted the financial and emotional significance of returning to the top flight, referencing the unexpected relegations of major clubs like Leicester City, who won the Premier League in 2016 but find themselves in League One a decade later, not unlike Blackburn Rovers. Against this backdrop, Lampard’s achievements take on added weight for the Sky Blues.
