Manchester United's head coach Michael Carrick praised 15-year-old Jay-Jay Gabriel. The young player made his debut in a friendly match against Atlético Madrid (2:1).
The match took place in Stockholm. Gabriel came on as a substitute for Brian Mbemo towards the end of the game. Last season, the forward scored 29 goals for the U18 team.
Last week, the lad was included in the squad for the match against Rosenborg but remained on the bench. Now Carrick has given him his first chance in senior football.
“I think overall we look strong as a team, which is always the most important thing. Throughout the team, I think there were really good performances,” noted the Manchester manager.
He particularly highlighted the impact of Gabriel and Jimmy Twycross's appearances.
“To see young players come on and make an impact, with Jimmy and Jay-Jay coming on at the end, is great for us to be in a position where I can give them opportunities,” said the coach.
Carrick also expressed satisfaction with the team's physical condition during pre-season training.
“Touch wood, no injuries. There’s always a need to find the balance: how much we push players and how much we protect them? At the moment, the lads are in very good shape,” emphasised the Englishman.
The coach believes the team is making significant progress ahead of the new season.
“I think there have been lots of good things we are looking for and trying to improve over the three weeks of pre-season. There are many good signs for us. At this stage, it won’t be perfect, but there have been plenty of real positives both individually and collectively,” added Carrick.
Next weekend, the Mancunians will continue their pre-season preparations, playing against PSG in Gothenburg.
