Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has explained the signing of experienced players Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck. He highlighted the need for composure, leadership, and balance to ensure the successful development of the team.

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has explained the thinking behind the club's recent signings. This summer, Chelsea sought to bolster their squad with experienced heads – Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck.

“We had plenty of talent, but we were lacking coolness and the ability to navigate tough situations. Experience allows players to cope when things aren't going your way, and leadership is vital for guiding the younger lads. This isn't a secret in football. Young players need support, and that usually comes from those with a wealth of minutes and matches behind them,” Alonso stated.

“As I've mentioned before, I'm really pleased with the squad and its potential. Nonetheless, there are aspects we could improve. Through my observations and conversations with people at the club — including players — it became clear that the right balance is essential. You need a balance in physical preparation, and you also need a blend of talent and experience,” the Spaniard added.

“It's crucial to have the right balance for player development to reach that level of maturity. Nothing is perfect, but we've reached a point where we can see that what we've done, with a sound logical approach from a footballing perspective, has set us on a good path for this new project,” emphasised the Blues' coach.
