Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney opened up about the sacrifices he made for the club during his playing career. In the Stick to United podcast, he reminisced about an extreme episode from 2010, just before a Champions League match against Bayern Munich.
Rooney arrived at the game on crutches, having travelled with the team by bus. He originally intended to just wish his teammates good luck in the dressing room but ended up starting the match.
When questioned by host Mark Goldbridge on how that was even possible, Rooney explained:
Because Ferguson asked me to get a jab to play. I had the injection, but I had to come off at half-time. I took my boot off, and my ankle was swollen to such a size.
In the end, the forward required a painkilling injection, but the injury proved too severe, and he was substituted after the first half.
