The likelihood of Liverpool losing their talisman Virgil van Dijk this summer is growing. A third European top club has expressed interest and sent a scout to watch the defender in action.
The Dutchman is approaching the final stretch of his contract, and if he doesn’t sign a new deal, this season could mark his last at Anfield.
In addition to interest from AC Milan and Real Madrid, Juventus have now joined the race for the defender. According to reports from Gazzetta dello Sport, an emissary from the Italian club who is close to coach Luciano Spalletti was spotted at the recent international fixture between the Netherlands and Germany, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
The scout's mission was to assess van Dijk and fellow player Brian Brobbey. Juventus are keeping a close eye on the 35-year-old's performance and may make a concrete transfer bid if Brazilian Gleison Bremer decides to head to the Premier League.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid continues to monitor the situation. Rumours of van Dijk potentially joining Milan have been swirling for some time now.
Journalist Carlo Pellegatti weighed in on the matter:
People occasionally laugh at me for discussing van Dijk's transfer, but they did the same back in January before Zlatan Ibrahimovic arrived. I maintain that Gerry Cardinale has made it clear: ‘Either we sign him now for a fee, or next year for free.’ I’ve stated before that van Dijk will eventually move to Milan. We’ll see if Cardinale changes his mind, but I assure you this isn’t just a name I pulled out of thin air.
Recently, van Dijk confirmed he would continue representing the Netherlands national team. Given the high calibre of his performance, it’s no surprise that such prestigious clubs are keen to add the seasoned defender to their ranks.
