This winter, Manchester United will focus on signing new defenders to address chronic defensive issues. The INEOS hierarchy trusts Michael Carrick and considers strengthening the back line a top priority.

Manchester United are set to focus on strengthening their defence during the upcoming January transfer window. The club's hierarchy views this as a crucial next step in the team's rebuilding process.

In recent transfer windows, the club has been active in refreshing their attacking and midfield options, but a rocky start to the season has once again exposed long-standing issues at the back. Manager Michael Carrick remains under pressure, yet according to Football Insider, INEOS is prepared to give him more time rather than resort to immediate dismissals.

Journalist Pete O'Rourke notes that bringing in a new forward is not currently on the agenda. The manager already boasts a strong attacking arsenal with players like Benjamin Sesko, Brian Mbemo, Matheus Cunha, and Marcus Rashford alongside a solid midfield featuring Carlos Baleba, Youri Tielemans, and Andre Santos. Now, the focus will shift entirely to scouting for defensive reinforcements, particularly left and centre-backs, considering the uncertain futures of Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire, and other veterans.

Despite having players such as Lisandro Martinez, Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui, Diogo Dalot, and Lenny Yoro, United's defence remains the least transformed area of the squad. Scouting for defenders will continue regardless of who is managing the team, as the need for swift and resilient players has become pressing.
