Tectonic shifts are occurring within the hierarchy of Chelsea. Co-owners Todd Boehly and Mark Walter have reached the final stages of negotiations to sell their shares to Clearlake Capital.
Back in spring 2022, a consortium of investors, which later became the holding company BlueCo (including Todd Boehly, Mark Walter, Hansjörg Wyss, and Clearlake Capital), acquired the club for a staggering £2.35 billion. After four years of partnership, their paths are set to diverge.
According to reputable sources such as TalkSPORT, the two parties are on the verge of concluding a historic deal. Reports suggest that Boehly and Walter have agreed to lower their initial demands, meaning the final valuation of Chelsea will come in below the £5 billion mark they initially sought. Nevertheless, the deal will ensure significant profits for the American businessmen compared to the purchase price in 2022.
Currently, Boehly and Walter collectively own approximately 26% of Chelsea. The completion of this sale will elevate Clearlake Capital's stake, under the management of Behdad Eghbali, from 61.5% to over 85%, effectively turning the investment firm into the principal owner of the London giants. The intentions of another minority stakeholder, Swiss billionaire Hansjörg Wyss, remain unclear at this stage.
In recent years, Boehly's leadership has faced intense criticism from fans and pundits alike for a perceived lack of patience; impulsive managerial changes, chaotic squad turnover, and a flurry of transfers have destabilised the team at Stamford Bridge. The transfer of full control to Clearlake Capital is seen as a significant step toward ending the dual ownership and bringing much-needed stability back to the club.
