21-year-old Spanish defensive midfielder Stefan Bajcetic is on the brink of leaving Liverpool as the summer transfer window nears its close. According to Galician outlet Faro de Vigo, the player has been offered an early termination of his contract with the Reds to rejoin his hometown club Celta Vigo as a free agent.
Before finalising the move, Bajcetic flew to Finland for an in-depth medical examination and consultation with the surgeon who previously operated on his leg, ensuring he has a clean bill of health ahead of signing a new contract.
Bajcetic joined Liverpool's academy from Celta in 2021 and made a significant impact in the 2022/23 season, drawing comparisons to Sergio Busquets. However, a severe calf injury sidelined him for an extended period, and subsequent loan spells at Red Bull Salzburg and Las Palmas failed to restore his former fitness. Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola doesn’t see the midfielder fitting into his tactical plans.
Celta boss Claudio Giraldés has confirmed his eagerness to welcome back his protégé:
If Stefan is happy and we can reach an agreement, it would be a great decision for everyone. He is one of our own, and there has always been a close connection between us. I personally coached him in the youth teams.
Following the sale of Curtis Jones to Inter Milan, Liverpool are not planning to sign any new central midfielders, focusing all their resources on a high-profile transfer for PSG striker Bradley Barcola.
