Football leaks emerged in 2015
Pinto created Football Leaks with the declared aim of exposing the hidden sides of football.
The first journalist he contacted was Antonio Varela from the Portuguese newspaper Record. Initially, Pinto operated under the pseudonym John.
Varela gained access to a vast trove of documents and, along with his colleagues, discerned that the information held substantial public interest.
Later, Pinto began collaborating with journalist Raphael Buschmann from Germany's Der Spiegel. Through him, an international team of investigators was able to review tens of millions of documents.
Overall, Pinto provided Der Spiegel and other journalistic entities with over three terabytes of information.
Not just Manchester City
Football Leaks did not focus solely on Manchester City.
Documents and communications related not just to City, but also to clubs like Benfica and Porto, as well as notable players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Neymar, were made public.
Journalists from Der Spiegel emphasised that the leaked documents warranted thorough verification and cross-referencing with other sources before publication.
Data analyst Christoph Winterbach from Der Spiegel called Pinto one of the most significant informants in Europe.
Hero or criminal?
Herein lies the crux of the debate surrounding Pinto.
Former Portuguese politician and diplomat Ana Gomes regards him as a crucial whistleblower who should be protected rather than prosecuted.
"What he exposed is incredibly important. He is undoubtedly the most significant informant in Portugal," she stated.
Gomes also believes that Pinto could assist law enforcement in investigating corruption.
On the flip side, there exists a contrasting viewpoint.
Former journalist Jose Carlos Freitas argues that for many, Pinto remains a figure who unlawfully obtained private information.

In 2019, he was arrested in Hungary and subsequently extradited to Portugal. He has faced solitary confinement, house arrest, and protection under a witness protection programme at various times.
By 2023, following his first trial, Pinto received a four-year suspended sentence after being found guilty of attempted extortion, illegal data access, and breaching correspondence privacy.
A separate trial in France concluded with a six-month suspended sentence.
The latest court proceedings in Lisbon began in January 2025.
How football leaks affected the Manchester City case

In February 2023, the Premier League issued 115 charges against the club for alleged breaches of financial rules between 2009 and 2018. Manchester City vehemently denies all allegations.
By September 2026, an independent commission ruled that the club was guilty on 114 of the 115 charges. However, the process is still ongoing: an appeal is likely, and the question of sanctions remains unresolved.
