Italian side Roma has seized the initiative from Nottingham Forest in the pursuit of 20-year-old Feyenoord right-back Xavi Simons.
While Everton has also shown interest in the Dutch youth international, the club's Champions League qualification proved decisive for the player. Meanwhile, Everton has shifted its focus to Celtic's right-back Alistair Johnston.
Battle for the promising defender
Simons is regarded as one of the most talented full-backs in Europe. Previously, scouts from Arsenal and Liverpool had monitored the player, while Fulham and Bournemouth were engaged in negotiations before the Cherries ultimately opted for Juanlu Sanchez from Sevilla.
The most serious bid from the Premier League was made by Nottingham Forest, who sent three inquiries to Feyenoord. The last offer from the English club reached €23 million (£20 million), but the Rotterdam side refused to lower their asking price.
Terms of the deal with Roma
Roma capitalised on the situation, offering €25 million (£21 million). The Italian club is aiming to arrange a medical for the player in Rome in the coming days.
This deal underscores the strategy of the owners, The Friedkin Group, who leverage the close relationship between Everton and Roma to seek out young talent, even if, this time, the player heads to Stadio Olimpico rather than Hill Dickinson Stadium.
If Nottingham Forest does not make an even more generous offer, Simons will continue his career in Serie A.
