Legendary Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has urged the club to consider signing star striker Karim Benzema, currently a free agent following his departure from Saudi side Al-Hilal.
Michael Carrick's team has had a shaky start to the season, languishing in 12th place in the Premier League table. Despite investing around £150 million in strengthening the midfield over the summer, fans and pundits are criticising the club's hierarchy for failing to provide a proper replacement for Benjamin Sesko in attack. The Slovenian forward has been struggling with a shin injury and has frequently missed matches, while the use of Matheus Cunha in the false nine position has not resolved the issue of lacking a traditional centre-forward.
Ferdinand believes that the 38-year-old French forward would be a perfect fit for the club, helping to lighten the load for Sesko, share his vast experience, and introduce more variety to their attacking play.
If you know you need to manage his game time... if you had someone up top who could share the minutes, share the load, help in terms of experience, passing that onto Sesko so he can learn too – you’d get much more out of it, Ferdinand stated.
It’s worth noting that Benzema scored 10 goals in 12 league matches during his six months at Al-Hilal before his contract was terminated.
