Brighton's executive director Paul Barber has shed light on the club's decision to offload Danny Welbeck to Chelsea, emphasising a pragmatic approach.
Barber highlighted the importance of looking to the future under manager Fabian Hurzeler:
We understand the emotions surrounding this transfer — we're feeling it too because Danny is a fantastic player who has delivered for us over the last six years. However, we also have to view the situation through a pragmatic lens, both from a business perspective and in terms of our squad options for the upcoming season under Fabian Hurzeler.
If Danny had started the first four or five games and picked up an injury, some people would have been saying: 'Why are you relying on a 36-year-old player?' or 'This is ridiculous, you should have thought about this sooner!'
