Chelsea owner Mark Walter is under federal investigation in the USA over affiliated loans worth $21 billion.

Co-owner of Chelsea, Mark Walter, is under investigation by federal authorities in the USA due to issues surrounding loans amounting to $21 billion.

The investigation relates to two insurance companies based in Delaware owned by the American businessman. According to the Los Angeles Times, these organisations failed to disclose to state regulators information regarding loans issued to affiliated parties. The funds were directed towards companies linked to Walter himself and his holding company, TWG Global. Initially, the insurance firms reported $1 billion in related loans, but subsequent internal audits reclassified total loans amounting to $21 billion as affiliated.

As part of the probe, authorities have issued subpoenas and seized Walter's mobile phone and laptop. The investigation is ongoing, and while there have been no comments from Walter himself, a representative from TWG Global has defended the company and its owner.

Thus far, there is no indication that the investigation has impacted Walter's ownership of Chelsea or his other sporting assets, which include Major League Baseball's Los Angeles Dodgers and the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers.

These emerging issues come at a tough time for Chelsea. Following their victory in the Club World Cup in the summer of 2025, the club has endured a managerial merry-go-round: Enzo Maresca departed in January 2026, and his successor Liam Rosenior lasted just over 100 days before Xabi Alonso took the reins. Chelsea has been active in the transfer market this window as well, completing a record £117 million move for Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, alongside signings of Maxence Lacroix, Geovany Quenda, Marco Palestra, Valentin Barco, and Pep Chavarria.
