Omar Marmush is finding it tough to make his mark since joining Tottenham on loan. The Egyptian forward has yet to register a goal or an assist in his first five matches, leaving manager Roberto De Zerbi to ponder his optimal role.
In the League Cup clash against Liverpool, Marmush was deployed as the sole central striker, whereas he was shifted to the left in the attack during the encounter with Aston Villa.
With Dominic Solanke returning from injury, the competition for places up front is set to intensify. The young Englishman is expected to reclaim his position at the centre of the attack, which means Marmush may need to fight for a spot on the wing instead.
Adding to Marmush's woes, Matis Tell is announcing himself with gusto. The 21-year-old Frenchman scored five goals in four matches for the France U21 side during the international break, including a hat-trick against Switzerland.
Despite his impressive form, Tell is not getting consistent playing time at Tottenham. In the game against Aston Villa, De Zerbi didn't include him in the squad, citing tactical reasons.
As the October 10 showdown against Manchester United looms, De Zerbi faces a significant decision in attack: stick with Marmush or grant more minutes to Tell following his standout performances for the national team.
Changes may also impact other positions. Pedro Porro has been sidelined due to injury, while Mickey van de Ven and Jan Paul van Heck are on the verge of returning.
Andy Robertson has played all four matches for Scotland in the past three weeks, so the 32-year-old defender might need a breather. In midfield, Mateus Fernandes also risks losing his place to Conor Gallagher.
