15-Second Brief
Christopher Nkunko has explained the challenges of his debut season at Chelsea, where the push to recover from knee surgery led to muscle injuries, preventing him from settling in after his £52 million transfer.

French striker Christopher Nkunko has candidly discussed his challenging initiation with Chelsea, acknowledging that a combination of unfortunate transfer timing and a serious knee injury severely impacted his adaptation process.

In the summer of 2023, Nkunko made the move to the English capital from RB Leipzig for a fee of £52 million. However, his pre-season was cut short by a significant knee injury that required surgery, sidelining him for most of the first half of the 2023/24 season.

Nkunko emphasised that one of his critical mistakes was his eagerness to make up for lost time:

The issue was all about timing: when I first arrived, everything seemed to be going perfectly. But at the very end of pre-season, I had to undergo surgery for the first time in my life. For any footballer, that is the worst possible moment, especially as pre-season must be finished on the pitch.

As a result, I didn't start the season with the squad. For me, it was a completely new club with new teammates, and being injured made it incredibly challenging to connect and bond with the lads.

Upon my return, I was desperate to reach my previous level as soon as possible. I wasn’t listening to the signals my body was sending me; I was young and just wanted to get back to playing and training with the main group. This impatience led to a series of niggling muscle injuries and setbacks. Therefore, my first season was a struggle in terms of fitness and ongoing health issues.

A string of recurring injuries ultimately prevented the forward from unlocking his full potential at Chelsea, which may lead to his departure from the club at the end of the 2024/25 season.
