Newcastle United has officially announced the signing of 24-year-old Czech Republic goalkeeper Lukas Grnciak from Portuguese side Braga. The deal amounts to £25.7m as the English club activated a buyout clause in the player's contract.
Despite having already strengthened with 20-year-old goalkeeper Even Jauwen from Reims this summer, the club's hierarchy sought a more experienced candidate for the number one spot. The 198 cm tall goalkeeper has already joined the team's training camp in Spain and signed a five-year contract.

In an interview with the club’s press office, Lukas Grnciak shared his emotions about the move:
The last few days have been a real emotional rollercoaster since the moment I first heard about the interest, and I am incredibly happy to be here.

Progress in Europe and statistical successes
Newcastle United has been closely monitoring the Czech goalkeeper's performances over the past season. Grnciak helped Braga reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League by recording 7 clean sheets—an outstanding record among all goalkeepers in the tournament.
In addition to his goalkeeping skills, the keeper stands out for his confident distribution. According to Opta, in last season's Portugal league, Grnciak ranked second among goalkeepers for accurate passes (846) and fourth for passing accuracy (75%).
Newcastle's sporting director, Ross Wilson, highlighted the rapid rise of the newcomer:
His progress in recent years has been remarkable. He has firmly established himself as one of the best young goalkeepers in Europe. We knew there would be huge demand for him from other clubs this summer, but Lukas made it clear from the outset how much he wanted to be part of our project.
